Origins of the Name Lengshuikeng :

A hot spring is any natural spring of water at a temperature 6.5 C above the local mean temperature.  The yearly mean temperature in Yangmingshan is 18-21 C therefore any spring with a temperature above 30 C would be defined as a hot spring.  The Lengshuikeng spring is a little above 40 C, which is much cooler than the other 80-90 C thermal springs in the Park.

The cooler water temperature resulted in its name “Lengshuikeng” which translates as “cold water pit”.

About Lengshuikeng :

The name can be traced back to the Ching Dynasty.  The area is a bowl shaped low land with a constantly running hot spring.  Geographically, the valley in between Mt. Cising, Mt. Cigu and Mt. Jhugao was a lava dammed lake which gradually eroded into a flat valley.
  2. The area was cultivated much earlier than the other parts of the Park because of the close proximity of the Fishermen’s Trail.  The field right in front of the Visitor Center was the early settlers’ farm land.
  3. Lengshuikeng is situated at the center of the Datung Volcano group between the Jinshan and Kunja Faults.  This area is geologically vulnerable as there are numerous faults passing through.  The obvious geothermal activity makes this area rich in minerals and hydrothermal resources.  This was one of the major mining areas during the Japanese occupation period.
  4. The hot spring here is different from the other hot springs in the Park because it is heated indirectly by the residual heat from the Macao geothermal area. This is a neutral iron-bearing spring composed of diluted acid sulfate, with only a small amount of volcanic gas.
