THREE TAIWAN CITIES JOIN ‘SWITCH OFF, UNPLUG CAMPAIGN

Kaohsiung, June 21 (CNA) A campaign to heighten awareness of the seriousness of global warming has been set in motion, with three cities -- Kaohsiung, Taichung and Taipei -- joining hands to ask their residents to switch off and unplug all electrical appliances for 10 minutes on Friday.

The campaign, titled "Let the Earth Cool Off a Little: Unplug Your Appliances to Fight Global Warning," was initiated by the Taiwan Broadcasting System (TBS) , a public broadcasting service group consisting of four television stations, to coincide with the summer solstice. It is supported by the three city governments.

The organizers have urged all residents in the three cities to turn off or unplug their electrical appliances for at least 10 minutes from 7:40 p.m. to 7:50 p.m. June 22.

A concert will be held from 7:30 p.m. Friday at a plaza beside Kaohsiungs Love river to call public attention to the global warming issue, with all the lighting provided by solar energy, according to the organizers.

Another concert will be held at Taichungs Wenhsin Forest Park that same evening to increase the awareness among Taichung residents about the need to help slow down global warming. (By Han Nai-kuo)
