  • Is Yangmingshan an extinct volcano?

According to the International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth's Interior, the term "extinct volcano" is now considered obsolete. Starting in 1999, the park has hired experts to conduct volcanic gases and microseismic monitoring. Initially, it was suspected that a magma chamber existed underneath the Datun volcano group.

According to Professor Tsan-Yao Yang of the Taiwan University 's Department of Geology, the temperatures of the Datun volcano group is only close to boiling point, which is lower than that of low-temperature volcanoes, and is in no danger of erupting any time soon.

The park works closely with the Central Weather Bureau, the Central Geological Survey and Academia Sinica's Institute of Earth Sciences to maintain long-term monitoring to obtain more accurate and timely data regarding volcanic activity.

The Yangmingshan logo aims to display the park's volcanic terrain. The circular form is the same as the other eight national parks, representing the shape of the earth, the never-ending biogeochemical cycle and the concepts of sustainability and preservation.

The outer triangle symbolizes the national park's volcanic structure. The concave and convex of the middle triangle symbolizes the park's highest peak—Mt. Qixing.

The wavy lines surrounding the triangle represent the special sulfur fumes and fog of Yangmingshan. The abstract tree shape symbolized the park's natural flora and fauna.

The logo is green with blue stripes, symbolizing the green earth and blue sky, which is the space within which humans exist and survive. Other related information is available online.

  • Is entry allowed into the Huang creek, Bayan, and Gengziping hot springs area? Is entry into the hot springs allowed from other areas? Are visitors violating any rules or regulations when entering?

Dayoukeng and Qigu are open air hot springs which have seen a large influx of tourists due to media coverage. Many visitors have dug for hot springs themselves and this has damaged the springs' source causing them to dry up easily. Human activity has seriously disrupted the areas' natural landscape and ecology, and potential dangers are often neglected, resulting in injuries and threats to public safety.

Yangmingshan has volcanic terrain with numerous hot springs within the park. Most hot springs areas contain high temperature sulfuric gases, soft and unstable ground soil, and hidden fumaroles which have temperatures over 100°C. Visitors could easily fall into a fumarole accidentally, and due to the remoteness of these areas, it would take a long time to help rescue the injured people.

Park Headquarters has listed open air hot springs and streams as potentially dangerous areas. Access is restricted with warning signs at entrances or gates or fences, and the park police make regular rounds. Violators will be subject to a fine of NT 1,500 to 3,000 according to Paragraph 7 or Paragraph 8, Article 13 and Article 26 of the National Parks Act. Those engaged in the destruction of park signs, fences, gates, etc., will be subject to official charges of vandalism and prosecuted accordingly.

In the past, there have been instances where visitors suffered burns due to hidden fumaroles or even died due to oxygen deprivation in the hot springs. Park Headquarters urges visitors to not stray into areas not open to the public for their own safety.
