Formerly known as the Zhongxing Guesthouse, Yangmingshuwu was built during 1969 and 1970. It was originally used by former President Chiang Kai-shek for receiving foreign guests and as a summer home. It was the only residence to be personally picked out and constructed by the order of President Chiang in Taiwan. Today, it is an important cultural and historical site in Yangmingshan National Park which features both natural and human history, making it an intellectually and emotionally resonant recreational site. Tourist information and guided tours are available.

Yangmingshuwu has seen many changes in this area, from the time when Yangmingshan was still a Forest Park, to the Zhongxing Guesthouse period, and on through the Kuomintang Historical Commission period, finally culminating in its present-day designation as a national park.

Yangmingshuwu lies on approximately 15 hectares of land and is located on Zhongxing Road, next to the flower clock near the Yangjin Highway and Dongsheng Road. In its early history, the area was an unspoiled primeval forest and was under the jurisdiction of Yangmingshan Administration. It was also a camping site for the Scouts of China. In 1970, after construction on the Zhongxing Guesthouse and completion of auxiliary buildings, portions of the original forest remained untouched. For security reasons, the hotel was heavily guarded whenever former President Chiang was present. This has resulted in the rich natural environment which continues to surround Yangmingshuwu and Zhongxing Road to this day.

The Early Republic’s Martyrs and Sages – Calligraphy and Letters Exhibition(2nd Floor, Dazhongguan, Yangmingshuwu)

In 1911 a group of aspiring young individuals, influenced by western knowledge, joined together and rebelled against the corrupt and weak Manchurian Qing. These determined, patriotic and loyal intellectuals formed a group of revolutionists with Sun Yat-sen. In the same year, the Xinhai Revolution brought about the downfall of the Manchurian Qing, and resulted in the establishment of the Republic of China. Taiwan was under Japanese rule, and then a large scale anti-Japanese armed-uprising occurred (the Tapani incident) in 1915. Following on from this, the arrival of the Republic of China in Taiwan has forged our most recent memories. Every historical figure has a remarkable story to be told. This exhibition presents a collection of letters and calligraphy from famous revolutionists expressing their sentiments during a momentous time in their lives. In this exhibition, you will see the famous “Huang Xing dao” (Huang Xing has arrived) and Lin Juemin’s grave and heart wrenching farewell letter to his wife on the eve of battle: “Whilst writing, tears, brush and ink were coming down...”. And, Shi Jianru’s ink scattered amongst writing that he wrote in defiance and fury while undergoing a torturous prison sentence. This exhibition introduces numerous martyrs and sages, and presents a collection of their letters, scrolls, calligraphy, etc. from the tremendous challenges and battles they faced. From this precious collection we can gain an insight into the character this group of loyal and ambitious revolutionists possessed, at a time when they chose to make an ultimate sacrifice by shedding blood and giving their own lives, to fight for the ideals of their beloved nation.

During the great era of maritime discovery, Taiwan (Formosa) stepped onto the world stage under the colonizations by Spain (1626-1642) and the Netherlands (1624-1662). At that time, the indigenous peoples in northern Taiwan (Ketagalan) traded sulfur from their mines with other countries. In 1662, Zheng Chenggong (Koxinga) forced the Dutch to leave Taiwan by a combination of military force and trade embargoes. In 1683 (the 23rd year of Emperor Kangxi's reign), the Qing army, led by Admiral Shi Lang, captured Penghu, leading to the surrender of the Kingdom of Tungning. After the three reigns of Kangxi, Yongzheng and Qianlong from 1683 to 1795, the Qing dynasty adopted a more active attitude in governing Taiwan. More pioneering Han people migrated to the Taipei Basin, occupying and cultivating more of the territory traditionally belonging to the Ketagalans. In addition, the change in geography, such as the occurrence and disappearance of a lake in Taipei, changed the cultural and geographical landscape of northern Taiwan significantly. In 1895, Taiwan was ceded once again, this time to Japan. The Japanese discovered hot springs in Caoshan (Grass Mountain). Driven by the visit of the Crown Prince Hirohito to Taiwan, the Taiwan Governor-General Office, which was then the most supreme executive institute, constructed hot spring facilities in Caoshan. In 1937 (the 12th year of the Showa Period), a national park was planned to be built, but the plans were deferred because of the breakout of World War II. In 1945, the Kuomintang recaptured Taiwan, and moved their government to Taiwan in 1949. The residences of former presidents were located in Shilin and Grass Mountain, where the decision-making centers were located. In 1950, the Grass Mountain (Yangmingshan) Administration was established and the area was declared a special administrative region. In 1968, the administration was abolished. In 1985, the Yangmingshan National Park was established.

  • Grass Mountain Chateau
    Grass Mountain Chateau

Grass Mountain Chateau was located at a quiet alley of Hudi Road near the Yangmingshan First parking lot. It was a great place to overlook the Keelung River, Tamsui River, Guando Plain, Shezi Island and Mt. Guanyin of the Taipei City. The house was originally built as a guesthouse for Taiwan Sugar Corporation during Japanese Occupation era. It was also used as a residence for Japanese Emperor Showa while visiting Taiwan. In 1949, the former President Chiang Kai-shek used as a guesthouse. Thus, it became the first president residence in Taiwan. In 2002, Taipei city government appointed the house as a historical building and made it to become an art and cultural salon. It was open to the public on 5th of April in 2002 and offered a space for all types of art and creative displays. Unfortunately, the Grass Mountain Chateau was burned down in 2007. It is reopened on 30th of December in 2010 after 1 year and 4 months renovation.

  • Zhongxing Road
    Zhongxing Road

The only road from Yangmingshuwu to the outside world is through Zhongxing Road, which has a total length of about 2.6 km. Head 0.8 km up the road to Yangjin Highway for access to Jinshan, Wanli, and Tamsui; Go downhill 1.8 km for Yangming Park and Tienmu, Shipai, Shilin and Beitou areas. At the end of 1970 Former President Chiang Kai-shek moved into the Yangmingshuwu and the road was controlled and blockaded by the military with multiple sentries. All nearby residents knew that Zhongxing Road was where the former president lived and referred to the road as Zongtong Road, or “Presidential Road”

  • Flower Clock
    Flower Clock

Located approximately 1.8 km below the Yangmingshuwu is the Houshan Park part of Yangming Park. It is under the jurisdiction of the Taipei City Government Yangming Park Headquarters. The most famous sight in the park is the flower clock, made with seasonal flowers and plays music at regular intervals. The flower clock is a popular tourist site and photo spot. In addition, the nearby Datun Waterfall trail on the west side of the stream is adjacent to the landslide-slip geological sensitive region, steep, slippery and often falling rocks. The side slope collapsed and the base was eroded away in quite a few places. Please take the trailhead at Zhongxing Rd. to visit Datun Waterfall recreation area. Yangming Park is divided into Qianshan and Houshan Parks. Qianshan Park is next to the Yangmingshan Bus Station and has a swimming pool, skating rink, basketball courts, slides, public toilets and other facilities. It also has one male and one female hot spring baths, attracting bathing visitors every day of the week.
