Is Yangmingshan an extinct volcano?

According to the International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth's Interior, the term "extinct volcano" is now considered obsolete. Starting in 1999, the park has hired experts to conduct volcanic gases and microseismic monitoring. Initially, it was suspected that a magma chamber existed underneath the Datun volcano group.

According to Professor Tsan-Yao Yang of the Taiwan University 's Department of Geology, the temperatures of the Datun volcano group is only close to boiling point, which is lower than that of low-temperature volcanoes, and is in no danger of erupting any time soon.

The park works closely with the Central Weather Bureau, the Central Geological Survey and Academia Sinica's Institute of Earth Sciences to maintain long-term monitoring to obtain more accurate and timely data regarding volcanic activity.
