The main species of awn within the park is silvergrass （Miscanthus sinensis var. glaber）, which, due to the volcanic sulfur fumes, produces flowers with a red tint instead of the usual white. The flowers inspired the line "the red grass on the mountain seems to burn" in a poem about Yangmingshan. Every year in October, the silvergrass blooms red flowers, a sight which is unique to our park. The best places to view silvergrass flowers are Mt. Datun, Xiaoyoukeng, Macao, and from Lengshuikeng to Qingtiangang.
