Lullaby of the Forest- the Leaf-rolling Weevils
The weevils of the Attelabidae family roll up leaf of plants to provide their young with a place of protection and a stable food source. Currently there are about 20 species of weevils from the Attelabidae family. Taxonomically they belong to the Coleoptera order of the Insecta class. Species commonly found in the Yangmingshan area are the giraffe weevils (Paratrachelophorus nodicornis) and the attelabid weevil (Paroplapoderus pardaloides). Both species live at ground to low-altitude mountain areas but have different preferences for plants. The giraffe weevil is commonly found on shrubs and bushes such as the Wendlandia formosana and the Taiwanese maesa. The attelabid weevil prefers the Formosan hackberry. The film aims to instill a deeper understanding of local natural resources and further the goal of involving more people in ecological conversation through common species in Yangmingshan, such as the giraffe weevil.
