Preserving old memories - The Memories of Yangmingshan Photograph Collection Drive is here!

Photographs capture images that bring back memories in individuals and communities. Since the Qing dynasty, Yangmingshan has played an important role in Taiwan. Besides being an important source of sulfur ore, the mountain was also one of the places that Hirohito, former Emperor of Japan, visited in the early 20th century. After the emperor’s visit, Yangmingshan was designated as one of the venues of “The Taiwan Exposition: 40th Anniversary of Governance” to commemorate 40 years of Japanese rule in Taiwan. After 1945, Yangmingshan became a key meeting point for political parties, government officials, and military personnel. We hope that, through old photographs, we can share the remnants of history of Yangmingshan. In order to learn more about the past life of the Yangmingshan area, the Yangmingshan National Park Headquarters have organized the 2019 Memories of Yangmingshan Photograph Collection Drive with the intent of using collections of old photographs in creating an authentic representation of the historical Yangmingshan. The Yangmingshan National Park Headquarters also hopes that their efforts in collecting and digitalizing old photographs and preserving written records can prove useful for academic research, archival exhibitions, and other forms of use and reuse.

The photograph collection drive starts today and ends at 5pm on June 30, 2019. Photographs submitted must have been taken between 1840 and 1990 at Yangmingshuwu (formerly known as the Zhongxing Guesthouse) or any other location within the Yangmingshan area. All participants will receive one commemorative souvenir. Owners of winning submissions will receive NT600 per photograph as a reward for the archival use of the pictures. The original photographs will sent back to participants via registered mail after the pictures have been scanned or otherwise reproduced. Please refer to the official website of the Yangmingshan National Park Headquarters at https://www.ymsnp.gov.tw to download the rules and regulations of the event. We look forward to your submissions! Telephone: Yangmingshuwu person-in-charge: Mr. Lin, (02)2861-9816 Ext. 198.
