Get Ready for the 2017 New Year’s Day Mt. Qixing Climb!

Mt. Qixing is the highest peak in Yangmingshan National Park and the highest mountain in Taipei City. It is a stratovolcano, formed by the piling up of lava flows and pyroclastic rock after multiple eruptions. It offers enormous vistas and geological features formed by post-volcanic activity, such as fumaroles and sulfur crystals. The northern foot of Mt. Qixing, the windward side exposed to the northeasterly monsoon, is a landscape of pastures. A broadleaf forest, protected by mountains, is located on the southern slopes. Many different animals dwell beneath the variety of vegetation found here! Rich ecological resources await your exploration, so please come and enjoy the wonders of nature.

In order to help the public see the different sides and varied ecological landscapes of Mt. Qixing, the Yangmingshan National Park Headquarters' 2017 New Year's Day Mt. Qixing Climb will have a variety of different routes up the mountain to experience. Souvenir vouchers will be distributed at the Headquarters Visitor Center, Xiaoyoukeng Visitor Center, and Lengshuikeng Visitor Center starting at 8:00am the day of the event (quantities are limited to 400 souvenir vouchers per Visitor Centern). Each participant can get a summit certification stamp from Headquarters staff before 12:00 noon, either at the point about 1.4 K along the way from Xiaoyoukeng to Mt. Qixing, or at the three-way junction on the route between Mt. Qixing main peak and east peak. The voucher can then be exchanged for a souvenir at the Visitor Center, Xiaoyoukeng Visitor Center or Lengshuikeng Visitor Center. We welcome all enthusiastic mountaineering and hikers to join in the activity.

The Yangmingshan National Park Headquarters encourages New Year’s Day hiking participants to take public transportation. Take bus routes 260, Red 5 or 230 to the Yangmingshan bus station, then transfer to route 108 and get off at the Headquarters Visitor Center, Xiaoyoukeng Visitor Center, or Lengshuikeng Visitor Center. Other options include taking routes 111, 109, or 681 and getting off at Yangmingshan National Park Second Parking, or taking Bus S9 or S8 and getting off at the Headquarters Visitor Center stop. Bus S15 at the Jiantan MRT station offers a direct ride to Lengshuikeng Visitor Center.

Because the temperature on Mt. Qixing can reach 0°C at this time of year with strong wind gusts and often unpredictable weather conditions, participants are reminded to wear warm attire, prepare adequate rain gear, bring any necessary medications, and be careful of personal health. Do not hike if your health is not suited to it. Participants are also urged to be careful when driving in the vicinity of the Park.
