88th Anniversary Celebration of the Zhuzihu Ponlai Rice Foundation Seed Field (Now Known as the Zhuzihu Ponlai Rice Foundation Seed Field Story House) Will Be Held on the Afternoon of March 8, 2015 - All Spots Are Now Full!

In 1923, the Zhuzihu area was selected to cultivate Japonica rice and quickly became an important area for rice production which included the planting of new species and maintaining the purity of rice strains. At the time, Taiwan entered into a lucrative era of Japonica rice cultivation, and in 1926 the harvested rice was given a new name: Penglai rice. The Zhuzihu Ponlai Rice Foundation Seed Field and Warehouse was established on March 8, 1928 and served as the operational center for farming management, seed bank, and distribution center for all Penglai rice grown in Zhuzihu.

In 1973, the Office officially closed its doors. However, by 1976, the site had been refurbished twice by the military and was renamed the Plum Lotus Study Center, during which time it was used by the Military Police of the Ministry of National Defense. Later, owing to a special report espousing the importance of historic buildings drafted by former Legislative Yuan member Wu Szu-yao, the Taipei City Government Department of Cultural Affairs moved to designate the Zhuzihu Ponlai Rice Foundation Seed Field as a historic building on June 25, 2009. To showcase the history and local culture of the original Penglai rice fields in Zhuzihu, the Ministry of National Defense turned the building over to the Park Headquarters in 2011 according to relevant procedures. The plan to revitalize the historic building as Zhuzihu Ponlai Rice Foundation Seed Field Story House was implemented and it was successfully opened on December 23, 2015.

March 8 of this year (2016) will mark the 88th anniversary of the Zhuzihu Ponlai Rice Foundation Seed Field. To celebrate the anniversary, a simple but important commemoration will be held. Participating guests, including descendants of Hirasawa Kameichiro, who had a profound influence on the development of the original Penglai rice fields, along with representatives from government agricultural departments, professionals, scholars, local residents, and colleagues from the Park Headquarters, will gather to pay tribute to the history of Penglai rice's homeland. The commemoration will also serve to usher in a bright future for the Zhuzihu Ponlai Rice Foundation Seed Field Story House and enable the original Penglai rice field in Zhuzihu to continue to expand upon its fascinating history.
