Bayan Hot Springs in Yangmingshan Naiotnal Park Is a Potentially Hazardous Area; To Ensure Public Safety, Entry Is Prohibited
Yangmingshan's Bayan Hot Springs is located in Chonghe Village, Bayan Area, Jinshan District in New Taipei City. Its geological condition is influenced by the Datun Volcano Group, which generates fumaroles and openings in the hot springs. The wild stream features unique scenery dotted with white andesite caused by sulfurous gases and geothermal water. Visitors are often influenced by information on the Internet and other media and travel to the stream to dig and pile up stones to form bathing areas in the hot springs. However, these visitors do not understand the underlying risks, and most are unaware that the area is actually very dangerous.
Due to geological activity in the vicinity, the fumaroles that emit sulfurous gases and hot springs openings in the Bayan Area are very unstable. Visitors may be scalded by newly-formed fumaroles and resulting high water temperatures. In addition, the slopes of the Datun Volcano Group are steep and the loose stones and soil near the volcano cone could easily collapse due to weathering. Owing to Yangmingshan's unpredictable weather, falling rocks, landslides, and flooding could strike at any time. In consideration of these risks, the Yangmingshan National Park Headquarters has listed Bayan Hot Springs as a potentially hazardous area and public entry is no longer permitted. Barriers and signs have been erected on the site, but some visitors have still been found to trespass without concern for their own safety.
The National Park Headquarters urges the public to exercise extreme caution. The temperature of fumaroles and hot springs in the Bayan Hot Springs can reach scalding temperatures, and the area's unstable geology could lead to falling rocks and landslides. In addition, the unstable weather of the mountainous area can result in flash floods. Therefore, this dangerous area is no longer open to the public. Anyone found to be trespassing in the area will be in violation of the National Park Law; such behavior is not only inviting unnecessary risk, but will also result in disciplinary action by the National Park Headquarters. Therefore, the National Park Headquarters urges the public to not enter the area under any circumstances.
