The 2015 Yangmingshan Butterfly Festival is coming. The festival will be held from May 30 to June 21, please note that no vehicles will be allowed to enter the Mt. Datun car lane during the festival.

Taiwan is home to approximately 400 species of butterflies, of which 180 have been recorded in the Yangmingshan National Park. As temperatures rise each year during the months of May to July, nectariferous plants such as the Eupatorium shimadae, the Angelica dahurica var. formosana (Boissieu) Yen, and the Sambucus formosana Nakai start to bloom. Many butterfly species enter the metamorphosis development stage during this time of the year as well, leading to an explosion in butterfly population. The primary butterfly species are the milkweed butterfly and the Eupatorium. Mt. Datun area is home to the largest population of butterflies, with its accessibility, this is truly the perfect place for visitors to enjoy the spectacular sights each year. The Mt. Datun car lane is one of the main butterfly-viewing routes in the park. To preserve plant and animal habitats while still offering visitors a safe butterfly-watching experience, all vehicles (including bicycles) are prohibited from entering the road between the hours of 8AM to 4PM from May 30 to June 21, official park vehicles excluded. We seek your full cooperation and apologize for any inconvenience.

In order for everyone to enjoy the park and its festivities at a relaxed, leisurely pace, the Yangmingshan National Park Headquarters highly recommends all butterfly enthusiasts to take advantage of the public transit system. Visitors who are driving are advised to park at the MRT stations or nearby parking lots, then take the metro to MRT Jiantan Station and transfer to the R5 bus. From the Taipei Main Station, take the 260 or 1717 bus. From Beitou MRT Station, take the 230 or S9 bus. From Shipai MRT Station, take the S8 bus. All buses mentioned above will take you to the Yangmingshan bus station or the nearby bus depot, where you can take the 108 bus to Erziping.

Please be advised that due to unpredictable weather conditions and cooler temperatures in higher altitudes, visitors should prepare extra clothing, rain gear and any personal medications. Lastly, please do not pick the plants and disturb the butterflies or any other wildlife, please be more mindful of the environment and remember to take your trash with you!
