Court acquits former Taipei mayor of corruption

Taipei, Aug. 13 (CNA) Former Taipei Mayor Ma Ying-jeou was acquitted of corruption charges Tuesday.

The Taipei District Court said in its judgment that Ma was not guilty of embezzlement.

Ma was charged on Feb. 13 for inappropriately lining his own pocket with NT$11.17 million in public funds between Dec. 1998 and July 2006 during of his term as Taipeis mayor. The funds in question had been set aside to cover the mayors job-related expenses.

The prosecutor in charge of the case claimed in the indictment that Ma transferred half of those public funds to his personal bank account every month, keeping that portion which was not used as his personal income, with the knowledge that they were public funds.
