Which mode of transportation offers the most leisurely, eco-friendly access to a national park? Why the answer is simple, of course: cycling! Bicycles are an important part of Taiwan’s history and today remain as popular as ever—in fact, cyclists can be seen on roads throughout Taiwan every day. Biking has become an excellent way to get around town, and is both good for the environment and for our health.
As part of the annual "World Carfree Day” celebration and in recognition of the Taiwanese government’s energy conservation and emissions-reduction policy, the Park Administration will be holding the “2013 Yangmingshan Bicycle Festival” on September 15th. The event will give participants the chance to ride on a 66-kilometer long circuit beginning and ending at the Qingtun Parking Lot outside Zhongshan Hall. Notable sites along the way will include Xiaoyoukeng, Macao, Bayan, Jinshan, Wanli, Fengguikou, and Pingdeng Village.
The festival, set against the backdrop of the beautifully striking scenery of Yangmingshan National Park, is primarily dedicated to promoting low-carbon tourism and will not be a ranked competition. This means that participating cyclists are welcome to take breaks at anytime and utilize the event’s comprehensive roadside assistance program. Emergency vehicles and equipment will be onsite at all times. Although participants are not required to finish the entire circuit, we warmly encourage everyone to push their “physical limits" while enjoying an exciting cycling adventure.
Other highlights will include free admission to the Yangmingshan agricultural fair at the main festival venue (Qingtun Parking Lot) as well as a family bike ride event designed to raise awareness about the urgency of ecological sustainability in a fun and educational setting.
Applications for the 2013 Yangmingshan Bicycle Festival are being accepted now through August 15th. So, for all you cycling enthusiasts out there—be sure not to miss out and sign up online now!
