Yangmingshan National Park Headquarters: Guidelines for Interacting with Wild Animals

Yangmingshan National Park is situated nearby the greater Taipei metropolitan area. Due to northeasterly monsoon winds and the area's special volcanic terrain, the Park possesses diverse species and wild animal groups in the medium to low altitude area of northern Taiwan.

Owing to its accessible location, Yangmingshan National Park has become a popular destination for people who wish to enjoy recreational activities and experience ecological education. A variety of insects, reptiles, birds, mammals, and natural wonders are found in abundance throughout the Park.

However, animals abandoned by people have also been found in the Park, including dogs, cats, Formosan macaques, red-eared slider turtles, red swamp crawfishes, and others. Some of these animals are invasive species that could jeopardize the survival of native species. They threaten not only the natural food chain but also the safety of visitors, and may carry infectious diseases. With the increasing number of recreational activities, stray dogs and cats, released, abandoned or improperly fed by people, have threatened the safety of visitors’ at all scenic spots. In addition to continuing monitoring, investigating and controlling invasive species, the Headquarters also notifies Taipei City Animal Protection Office and Animal Protection and Health Inspection Office, New Taipei City Government for removal.

In nature, wild animals have their own natural instincts when foraging and feeding, forming an intricate food chain (network). Improper feeding could change the feeding habits of animals and cause dependence on humans for sustenance, threatening the balance of local ecology and visitor safety. When entering the national park and enjoying the numerous aromas and beauty of the area's natural landscape, please do not abandon or release your pets or feed wild animals at the Park, such as stray dogs, Formosan macaques, squirrels, and birds. Let us protect the beautiful mountains around the metropolis together so that everyone can experience the beauty of nature in the national park.
