The Park Headquarters Urges the Public to Take Precautions Against Avian Influenza A (H7N9)

The recent outbreak of influenza A (H7N9) in China is being closely watched by the government and general public. The Yangmingshan National Park is one of the popular tourist destinations for Mainland Chinese tourists, and the Headquarters is committed to taking relevant precautionary measures against influenza A (H7N9) to protect the safety of visitors and the environment.

The precautions adopted by the Headquarters concerning H7N9 target three main areas of concern: tourist services, species conservation, and habitat conservation. In terms of tourist services, the Headquarters will raise awareness by posting the latest news and information about H7N9 on the Park's official website, at the Headquarters Visitor Center, and at individual visitor centers throughout the Park. In addition, the Park will provide soap and hand washing facilities along with alcohol hand sanitizer for increased protection. Regarding species conservation, the Headquarters asks people not to feed or touch any wild birds and to avoid coming into contact with their excrement in order to stop the path of the virus from spreading. On the subject of habitat conservation: The Headquarters will regularly carry out disinfection tasks and control the flow of traffic and visitors into important habitats within the Park in order to prevent the spread of viruses and strengthen the monitoring of wild animal populations. In the event of a suspected outbreak of influenza which can be transmitted between people, livestock, and/or birds, the Headquarters will immediately notify the relevant authorities and close affected ecological conservation zone(s) immediately to reduce the risk of an influenza pandemic.

The park director has stated that in order to prevent the spread of Influenza A (H7N9), the Headquarters will provide complementary soap and hand washing facilities as well as alcohol hand sanitizer at all visitor centers. In addition, visitor centers will be regularly sterilized in order to maintain a safe recreational environment. In the event of an epidemic outbreak, the Headquarters will measure the ear temperatures of visitors as a preventive measure similar to what was conducted during the outbreak of SARS. The enclosed audio-visual rooms at the Headquarters Visitor Center and Yangmingshuwu would also be temporarily closed. In addition, use of air conditioners at the Park's offices and visitor centers would be reduced, and windows and doors would remain open for ventilation purposes. No unusual situations have recently been noted concerning the birds in the Park. The visitor centers are still open as usual. Please be assured that we will continue sterilize the seats and other amenities. However, it might be best for the visitors to wear masks and wash hands regularly in a confined space. Let us say no to influenza A (H7N9) together.
