Car hits commuters at bus stop, killing one and injuring three
One woman was killed and three other people injured when a car ran off the road and careened into a bus stop in Taipei on Tuesday.
According to the Datong Police District, the small yellow sedan swerved into a bus lane and hit the bus stop at high speed at the intersection of Chongqing North Road and Liangzhou Street at 7:35 a.m.
The driver of the sedan, Lin Huang-bin, was going the wrong way on Liangzhou Street, which is one-way, when he swerved into the bus lane and crashed into the bus stop where eight people were standing waiting for buses, facing away from the oncoming car, the police said.
Four passengers were hit by the car, which did not stop until it hit a telephone booth another 20 meters along Liangzhou Street, a witness said on a TV.
Another witness said she saw the driver step out of the sedan and take a peek at the injured people. "The driver was aware that people were injured, but he got back into his car and reversed toward Chongqing North Road," the witness said.
A 38-year-old woman surnamed Yuan was knocked out of the bus stop by the force of the impact. She was taken to Mackay Memorial Hospital (馬偕醫院), but died after her arrival and emergency treatment there. Of the other three injured, two are high school students and one is an older citizen. The three suffered minor injuries. The other people at the bus stop ran away in panic.
The telephone booth that was hit by the car was completely demolished.
Deputy captain of the police precinct Lin Kuo-jung said the police found the yellow sedan in Luzhou in Taipei County. The driver of the car Lin Huang-bin, who has a drunk-driving record, was still on the run as of press time Tuesday night.
