Typhoon CHAMPI Approaches Taiwan: Yangmingshan National Park to Close Ecological Protected Areas Starting October 23

According to the Central Weather Administration (CWA), Severe Typhoon CHAMPI, the 29th typhoon of 2026, was located at 20.6°N, 125.7°E as of 11:30 a.m. on October 22. The typhoon was moving northwestward, gradually turning north-northwestward, at a speed of 20 km/h. The CWA issued both sea and land typhoon warnings at 11:30 a.m. on October 22. CHAMPI is expected to come closest to Taiwan between October 23 and 24. The public is advised to remain alert and take necessary precautions.

The Yangmingshan National Park Headquarters (YMNP) announced that entry into the ecological protected areas of Yangmingshan National Park will be prohibited starting October 23, 2026, to ensure visitor safety.

During the closure period, all previously issued entry permits for the ecological protected areas will be revoked in accordance with Point 13 of the Guidelines for Applying for Entry Permits to the Ecological Protected Areas of Yangmingshan National Park. Once the typhoon warnings have been lifted, YMNP will assess post-typhoon recovery and environmental safety conditions before announcing the date on which entry will resume and applications will be accepted again. Visitors wishing to enter the ecological protected areas after reopening must submit new applications.

YMNP reminds visitors that although Yangmingshan is close to urban areas, its mountainous terrain and rapidly changing weather conditions can pose significant risks. The combined effects of the typhoon and the northeast monsoon may bring heavy rainfall, increasing the risks of slippery trails, landslides, falling rocks, and flash floods. Even if the rain temporarily stops, mountain areas may still be unsafe. Visitors are strongly advised to avoid entering mountainous areas and to stay informed of the latest typhoon updates and weather warnings issued by the CWA.

In addition, the book talk for Shang Tian Ran 《尚天然》, jointly organized by YMNP and Professor Hung Kuang-chi of National Taiwan University, is scheduled for Thursday, October 22, from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at Shan Cheng Secondhand Bookstore in Beitou District, Taipei. Whether the event proceeds as scheduled will depend on the Taipei City Government’s work suspension announcement. If the Taipei City Government announces a work suspension, the event will be postponed to a later date. Further details will be announced separately.

YMNP once again urges everyone to prioritize personal safety during the typhoon and postpone hiking, trekking, and other outdoor recreational activities. Please do not venture into mountainous areas during severe weather. Plan your next visit only after the typhoon has passed and weather and trail conditions are safe.
